I have a question for you...

I've been wanting to post book covers in my reviews to make them more visually interesting, but I also don't want to violate copyright. I am kind of confused about how all that works, so if someone could explain it to me in the comments I'd be very appreciative. Thanks in advance!

  1. I don't have an official answer for you (though I probably should, just for myself, since I do post book cover photos I grab from the Internet), but here is the way I look at it:

    1. I am not claiming that the cover photos are my own work.
    2. I figure it's basically like free advertising for the author/publisher/everyone involved
    3. I am not making any money from it in any way
    4. I have had at least 3 authors read my blog about their book and none of them complained about my using photos of the book covers

If you do find out anything official, though, be sure to post it here! I would like to know if I've been doing wrong.

  2. Kathy- Thank you so much! I will just go ahead and post them, then, and I will definitely post here if I find out something more.

  3. Kathy thanks for the advice. I've been using cover photos forever on my blog and have kind of been wondering if it's illegal or not but figured it was free advertising so I hoped no one would complain. Thanks for breaking it down and Zara, thanks for asking the question :)

  4. Brenna- I'm glad to hear no one has complained about you doing it, and I'm glad that other people have been wondering this too! :)

  5. If you're worried (which I don't think you should be) then why don't you take a photo of the book? I've seen other people do that on their blogs and I've done it on occasion when I couldn't find the right book cover for one of my reviews.

  6. Thanks, that's a good idea! I'll probably just use online pictures, though, since it doesn't seem to be a problem.
